To write news stories for journals and Mass Media has a special process only known by journalists.
Its origin hasn’t been clarified; some historians say that it was developed with the use of telegraphs, because the reporters had to send the information in a simple way and in a short period of time so the new item won’t be missed, or at least the most important part.
Anyway, they created a method of writing news that allowed them to expose the important facts at the beginning and to give the details of the information in order of matter. This method is called the Inverted Pyramid, as a metaphor of a triangle upside down, since it maintains the reader’s attention as it gives the facts in order of significance, first the substantial and interesting things. Also let the person who reads stop at any point without misunderstanding.
How do the reporters do it? Answering the 6W questions:
- WHEN
- WHERE
- WHAT
- WHO
- WHY
- HOW
These questions would present all the details that need to be cover by the reporter. Who has to respond them following the next order: in the first paragraph, it is one is also called lead, answer all the 6W in the simplest way; then, in the next paragraphs explain them widely; and, at the end write the less important data.
This is how we can read the paper and listen to news in the radio or tv and know almost everything just putting atention in the first part of it.
